Question:
It feels that I am not breathing through my nose when I am singing or talking and it causes pain in my jaw and throat. It is causing my voice to sound very low and scratchy at all times. People tell me it sounds like my voice is shaking. What causes this?
Answer:
Many people breathe through the mouth when they speak and sing and they do not suffer any adverse consequences or develop these symptoms. If you have pain in the jaw and throat you need to see a doctor. You might have issues with TMJ (Temporomandibular joint disorder) for example. But only a professional can help you diagnose. Shaking in the vocal tone could be caused by inadequate breath support, weak phonation or other physical issues. Try to work with a teacher or coach once you have seen the doctor.
