It isn’t always technique

One of the reasons I started teaching what I call the art of transformational voice, is because not everything can be reduced to or solved by vocal technique. There are certain elements of vocal function that need to be developed, refined and balanced: breathing, phonation and resonance.

After that, the quality and expressive impact of the voice depends on physical vitality, mental focus, emotional engagement and inspiration.

If you seem to be at a vocal standstill where limitations don’t seem to be shifting no matter what vocal remedies you employ, consider some of these other elements.

  • Are you sleeping, eating and exercising adequately?
  • Are you going through a difficult period in relationships or at work?
  • Do you have trouble concentrating?
  • Are you excited about singing or d you maybe need a break from it?

We can’t do everything at once, so choose one thing that seems like it might be diminishing your vocal production in a way that technique can’t get at and see if you can find someone to help you. Perhaps you’ll want to work with a personal trainer, a therapist or a coach. Or maybe you’ll just want to go to a movie or take a hike in the woods. Don’t worry about choosing the correct or best element to focus on. Everything will have a gift for you.
