One of the greatest barriers to learning and authentic expression is a need for approval. It keeps us focused on the externals, imagining and projecting onto teachers, audiences, and anyone listening instead of turning within to find what is true and called for in the moment.
A teacher is hired to give empowering suggestions and guidance for overcoming limitations. They will focus on what needs to grow as well as affirm what is working. True learning means being surprised, enlightened and sometimes disappointed or discouraged. It requires a willingness to look in the mirror without judgment or blame, to show up with faith and curiosity.
Audiences come to be entertained or moved. Being open to feedback and enjoying praise is different than a need for approval. Most great musical innovations would not exist if composers and performers relied on approval. Being able to hold and manifest artistic vision brings genius to the world.
When approval is the goal it’s hard to hear what others are expressing, to go deeper into relationships, or to transform. It robs vital energy that is needed for learning and creativity, and often generates disappointment.
