Audition nerves

Question:

I have a callback for an audition for the school Enharmonic group tomorrow. I have this problem where I cannot sing well in front of an audience, no matter how much I warm up. My throat gets all croaky and dry, and I can’t hit many notes at all. How can I fix this?

Answer:

Dryness and the resulting rasp in the vocal tone are common symptoms of performance anxiety. Sadly, the only way to work on it is to find situations that create the anxiety! You can take suggestions out of books and Internet tips from professionals who focus on helping people like you. You can try taking performance classes, joining Toastmasters, singing at open mikes or karaoke nights. You can also volunteer to sing at nursing homes and hospitals – places where you are reminded that singing is not about being good but about giving our all to others. You can also work with a counselor to see if you can release the cause of the anxiety that way.

You can do things to make your mouth water, drink water and try relaxing practices as well as meditation.
